The VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep & Allergy Medicine Section and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, & Critical Care Medicine urgently seek a Pulmonologist to join a dynamic and collaborative group of healthcare providers at VAPORHCS.

Position

The qualified applicant will work as part of the subsections of General and Interventional Pulmonary Medicine. The qualified applicant will have a record of accomplishment in clinical practice and education. They will also have an academic appointment at OHSU commensurate with their experiences and accomplishments. VA Portland’s affiliation with OHSU offers substantial research opportunities in Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine, and protected time for academic work is available for qualified faculty.

Expectations of this position include:

  • Collaborating with the OHSU Division to promote an innovative and rigorous educational experience for learners of all levels
  • Active engagement in the academic work of the Section and Division.

The successful applicant will have primary clinical roles in lung cancer diagnosis and management, including advanced diagnostic bronchoscopic procedures such as robotic-assisted/navigational bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound, and in General Pulmonary consultation. Ongoing critical care practice is not required.

Section

VA Portland’s Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep & Allergy Medicine has twenty-five full- and part-time faculty, including one medical and eight pulmonary intensivists, four pulmonologists, two interventional pulmonologists, two allergists (physician and PA/NP), six sleep physicians from five specialties, a behavioral sleep medicine psychologist and two advanced practice providers. In addition to clinical duties, many have significant leadership roles in research, educational and/or administrative activities at the local, regional, and national levels. Six faculty are physician-scientists whose research is funded by the NIH, VA R&D and other organizations.

Institution

VA Portland is a Level 1a, state-of-the-art facility situated next to the OHSU campus overlooking the city of Portland, OR. It is home to one of VHA’s highest complexity hospitals, providing care to Oregon’s Veterans while serving as a referral center for Veterans across the Pacific Northwest. VA Portland benefits from its close and long-standing academic affiliation with OHSU. Research and educational collaborations between the two institutions are facilitated by a walkable, 210 m climate-controlled skybridge connecting the campuses.

VAPORHCS currently ranks in the top 10 among VA organizations in overall grant support from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Currently, there are 169 staff Principal Investigators, including 7 Research Career Scientists and 10 Career Development Awardees, who are leading more than 585 active medical and behavioral science research projects. The VAPORHCS research community was supported by more than $43 million in VA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DoD) and other funding sources in Fiscal Year 2024.

OHSU medical students as well as ~700 interns, residents, and fellows from 12 specialties and 41 subspecialty training programs rotate through VA Portland’s clinics and inpatient wards, including ACGME-accredited fellowship training programs in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine. We have T32 and VA HSR&D post-doctoral fellowship programs to foster development of early career scientists. Similarly, OHSU has multiple programs (eg, a K12) to help faculty establish their scientific careers. 

Applicant Requirements

Applicants must be a US citizen eligible for federal service, have an MD or equivalent degree, and be Board-certified in Pulmonary or Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
